Thru-hole headers in tape and reel packaging

 

So you’ve been searching for a component and finally manage to find a part that meets the requirements perfectly, only to discover that it cannot be packaged appropriately for production processes, how frustrating!

GCT recently rose to the challenge with the BG041 series board to board connector through its custom packaging options.  Thru-hole 8 pin header connectors with 2.54mm pitch are only available in bulk packaging, a standard option in the industry for this type of product.

The customer required tape and reel packaging so that parts could be vacuum pick and placed for automated assembly.  To make things more difficult, a small cavity with a mating post height and tail length of 1.5mm was also required to house the part, tricky to say the least for tape and reel..

As a result, GCT now has the ability to supply thru-hole headers in tape and reel packaging.  By designing and tooling a custom tape and reel cavity to allow the thru hole pin header to be picked and placed in the surface mount process, GCT has demonstrated its capability and flexibility in providing a solution for the customer.

PCB stacking connectors above 50mm

Planar PCB connection when the PCB spacing is greater than 50mm is a challenge using traditional, economical elevated pin headers and sockets as the length of the pins can cause distortion either during the product manufacturing process or in the final assembly process.

An alternative option is to utilize a low cost PCB in place of the elevated pin header.

The picture shows an example from GCT’s 2.00mm pitch board to board connector range. Receptacle connectors are mounted on both horizontal PCBs.  BF100 on the uppermost PCB and a BF120 on the lower PCB.

On the vertical PCB the uppermost connector is a BF060 with the lower part being a custom shrouded version.

This arrangement can be made using parts from GCT’s 1.00, 1.27, 2.00 & 2.54mm pitch ranges.

We’ve been working with a customer who needed a customized stacking header with an extended height but tiny footprint to stack two PCB’s in parallel orientation. We offered an elevated header from our 1.00mm pitch board to board connector range, this looked like a perfect solution, but was prone to tipping during the solder process, a problem magnified by the tiny contact pitch.

To help balance the connector we molded a custom insulator and produced a PCB header with supporting feet.  The feet were designed to strategically to work around existing components on the PCB, which enabled the customer to avoid a PCB re-design.

Turnaround time on this design was seven to ten days.

Pin Header for USB Thru Hole footprint

GCT has developed a pin header for USB thru hole footprint.   The footprint matches the standard USB2.0 A type, full size standard.

A customer has designed their PCB for USB and during the final phases of the design wanted to have the USB connector mounted in the outer panel of the equipment.  This simple pin header for USB thru hole footprint allows users to switch to a panel mount USB interface, via a simple wire assembly, without the need for a main PCB change or an additional PCB to support the panel mount USB socket.Pin header for USB thru hole footprint

Micro USB connectors for PCB stacking?

Micro USB connectors for parallel PCB stacking?

GCT recently introduced USB3150, a vertical, B-type, PCB mounted, micro USB plug. Customers asked us, ‘can we use Micro USB connectors for PCB stacking ‘?

Our answer is yes, it’s a good option for some designs. From a PCB real estate point of view it’s a similar small footprint compared to post and box board to board connectors, such as 1mm (.039″) pitch.   There are two options for customer to choose from, a SMT receptacle, such as USB3140 or a thru hole receptacle, such as USB3105.

The graphic above shows the mating height options, unfortunately the stacking profiles are fixed, however a low profile of 8.63mm (.339″) may be achieved.

The additional benefits are that there is a lead in on the Micro USB receptacle which guides the Micro USB plug into place, this is not the case with a board to board connector.

There is an obvious advantage vs standard board to board connectors in high cycle application.  Micro USB connectors are rated and tested to ten thousand mating cycles, compare that to standard board to board connectors, which are rated at one hundred cycles.

One downside is that the contacts are limited to five circuits,unfortunately that is a given of the USB-IF standards for USB2.0.

The stacking connector range spans pitches from 1.00 mm (.039″) to 2.54 mm  (.1″) in surface mount and thru hole, with single, dual and triple rows.   GCT’s board to board stacking connector range offer total flexibility, with adjustable dimensions on mating pins, PCB thru pins and critically the ‘gap’ between PCB’s dimension.  All dimensions are specifiable to 0.01 mm, to ensure exact board spacing requirement is achieved.

As well as standard ‘open’ pin header with exposed pins, there are options for shrouded stacking headers.  Headers are keyed and mating with the socket is possible in one orientation only, in connector terms this is known as polarisation.  Shrouded connectors also offer increased physical strength when mated and insulated header pins reduce the chance of shorting.

Stacking shrouded sockets normally feature completely isolated contacts, which eliminates shorting risk.  They are available in a variety of stack height options, a slightly less flexible and more expensive choice than stacking headers but perfect for certain applications, especially where the header design is out of the customer’s control, such as in the case of an outsourced off the shelf module PCB with a standard pin header.

In addition GCT offer a wide range of non-standard board to board connector choices, such as a right angle elevated header which allows right angle PCB mating, custom SMT lead lengths, and custom packaging.

LED strip applications are often low cost, consisting of small panels of LED lights clustered on thin and long PCB’s. The PCB’s snap together in co-planar orientation.  GCT White Lite connectors fit perfectly with these applications as they’re economically priced and fit the small footprint/low profile space constraints.

Mated connector height is 2.6mm (.102”), with a total mated footprint of 8.80mm (.346”) width x 11.00mm (.433”) depth.

A dual contact design including a mating guide offers high reliability and protects terminals during the mating and un-mating process.  In addition the connectors are polarised – they may only be plugged together in the correct orientation.  Connector pitch spacing is 4.00mm, with a current rating of 3A per contact at 300V and operating temperature of -55° to +105°C.

At GCT we’re excited to be our expanding our board to board connector 3D model offering.  Customers told us they would like instantly downloadable models, so in response we designed a system to post models online for IGES, STEP and Parasolid files, this allows customers to download a representative selection of models and request the exact full GCT part numbers as necessary.

The board to board range has many possible part number iterations, take for example a thru-hole stacking header, there are selectable options on mating pin, solder pin and stacking dimension pin lengths, sometimes there are choices of multiple insulators, the combinations of options means many thousands of combinations, as such it’s impractical to have all model variations online.  We post a sample of models online, which allows customers to view and get a feel for the dimensional characteristics of parts, but for the exact requirement we offer a request system, where models get delivered in maximum two working days.  Once requests are validated by our sales teams then our technical product group based at Welwyn Garden City, UK produce the models.

Note when requesting models plating and packaging information isn’t required as these features don’t impact on the model.

LED PCB strips connectors

GCT offers an economical solution for connecting PCB strips in end to end orientation.

Desirable in solid state lighting applications where space is limited, in combination a vertical SMT socket and U-Shaped header allow horizontal PCB mating with plugging from above. The GCT solution allows LED strip PCB’s to be slotted into place and a U- Shaped header to be plugged in later, an additional benefit is easy repair and maintenance.

GCT’s White Lite connector range is available in 2-6 circuits, vertical socket (BG306) mates with either single insulator (BG304) or double insulator (BG305) U Shaped headers.

Insulators are LCP in natural coloured for better aesthetic effect, the light coloured parts reduce light absorption and reduce shadows.
