PCB stacking connectors above 50mm

Planar PCB connection when the PCB spacing is greater than 50mm is a challenge using traditional, economical elevated pin headers and sockets as the length of the pins can cause distortion either during the product manufacturing process or in the final assembly process.

An alternative option is to utilize a low cost PCB in place of the elevated pin header.

The picture shows an example from GCT’s 2.00mm pitch board to board connector range. Receptacle connectors are mounted on both horizontal PCBs.  BF100 on the uppermost PCB and a BF120 on the lower PCB.

On the vertical PCB the uppermost connector is a BF060 with the lower part being a custom shrouded version.

This arrangement can be made using parts from GCT’s 1.00, 1.27, 2.00 & 2.54mm pitch ranges.

Micro USB connectors for PCB stacking?

GCT recently introduced USB3150, a vertical, B-type, PCB mounted, micro USB plug. Customers asked us, ‘can we use Micro USB connectors for PCB stacking ‘?

Our answer is yes, it’s a good option for some designs. From a PCB real estate point of view it’s a similar small footprint compared to post and box board to board connectors, such as 1mm (.039″) pitch.   There are two options for customer to choose from, a SMT receptacle, such as USB3140 or a thru hole receptacle, such as USB3105.

The graphic above shows the mating height options, unfortunately the stacking profiles are fixed, however a low profile of 8.63mm (.339″) may be achieved.

The additional benefits are that there is a lead in on the Micro USB receptacle which guides the Micro USB plug into place, this is not the case with a board to board connector.

There is an obvious advantage vs standard board to board connectors in high cycle application.  Micro USB connectors are rated and tested to ten thousand mating cycles, compare that to standard board to board connectors, which are rated at one hundred cycles.

One downside is that the contacts are limited to five circuits,unfortunately that is a given of the USB-IF standards for USB2.0.

Board to board stacking connectors

The stacking connector range spans pitches from 1.00 mm (.039″) to 2.54 mm  (.1″) in surface mount and thru hole, with single, dual and triple rows.   GCT’s board to board stacking connector range offer total flexibility, with adjustable dimensions on mating pins, PCB thru pins and critically the ‘gap’ between PCB’s dimension.  All dimensions are specifiable to 0.01 mm, to ensure exact board spacing requirement is achieved.

As well as standard ‘open’ pin header with exposed pins, there are options for shrouded stacking headers.  Headers are keyed and mating with the socket is possible in one orientation only, in connector terms this is known as polarisation.  Shrouded connectors also offer increased physical strength when mated and insulated header pins reduce the chance of shorting.

Stacking shrouded sockets normally feature completely isolated contacts, which eliminates shorting risk.  They are available in a variety of stack height options, a slightly less flexible and more expensive choice than stacking headers but perfect for certain applications, especially where the header design is out of the customer’s control, such as in the case of an outsourced off the shelf module PCB with a standard pin header.
