This USB cable assembly is designed with an overmolded & wired pivot to snap into the customers housing this innovative USB cable assembly allows the whole assembly to be hidden in a cavity until needed.

Our customer came to us with the design brief, ‘we need to design a USB cable that can be packed away until required’.   We worked with in tandem with the customer and developed a plastic molded pivot which allows the cable to be hidden in a cavity until required, pretty neat!

One end of the cable assembly is a USB2.0 A type plug, the other a 4 pin 1.25mm pitch wire to board connector.

GCT Micro USB plug in ‘Nipper’, Worlds Smallest Phone Charger

Global Connector Technology’s new vertical Micro USB plug is perfect for docking applications. Often Micro USB male plugs are cable mounted and supplied as part of a cable assembly, however USB3150 is vertical PCB mounted, which allows it to be used in docking charging applications. A great example is the new launch of worlds smallest phone charger ‘Nipper‘ – currently on Kickstarter – using this part.

Nipper’ uses AA batteries to give your gadgets an emergency boost

  • Nipper charger was created by two students from Brunel University
  • Measures 1.7cm across and is designed to fit on a keyring
  • In the event of a phone running out of charger, users can buy two AA batteries and insert them into the device, using it to charge their phone
  • Batteries provide just enough power to make a call or access a map online

The Nipper is designed to be attached to a key ring (shown in the first illustration) and only used in an emergency. When this happens, users open it (2) and place two AA batteries between magnets (3) before connecting it to their phone (4). Includes GCT's micro usb plug.

The small cube has a cloth or leather strap and weighs just 10grams – less than a house key or charging cable.  The gadget doesn't need to be charged beforehand, meaning that people don't have to remember to charge a battery, as well as their phone. Includes GCT's micro usb plug.

LED strip applications are often low cost, consisting of small panels of LED lights clustered on thin and long PCB’s. The PCB’s snap together in co-planar orientation.  GCT White Lite connectors fit perfectly with these applications as they’re economically priced and fit the small footprint/low profile space constraints.

Mated connector height is 2.6mm (.102”), with a total mated footprint of 8.80mm (.346”) width x 11.00mm (.433”) depth.

A dual contact design including a mating guide offers high reliability and protects terminals during the mating and un-mating process.  In addition the connectors are polarised – they may only be plugged together in the correct orientation.  Connector pitch spacing is 4.00mm, with a current rating of 3A per contact at 300V and operating temperature of -55° to +105°C.

Nano SIM Connector SIM8050 – Re-Engineered to 1.35mm Profile

Profile height is reduced to 1.35mm (.053″).  SIM8050 also offers the smallest SMT footprint size of any Nano SIM connector on the market at: 10.8mm x 12.20mm (.425” x .480”).

SIM8050 now includes a protective full metal shell offering better protection from heat damage to the SIM card.  Improved card insertion and extraction allows for a better user experience, whilst maintaining excellent vibration and shock characteristics.

The connector is available as 6 contact push-pull type, cards are inserted and removed by hand. It’s suitable for 5,000 card insertion cycles and a card stop function allows the Nano SIM card to by plugged in one orientation only.

There are tray type Nano SIM connectors on the market, formed from a basic contact block and metal shells, which must be purchased separately. In addition to multiple reflow processes the customer must source a plastic tray to hold the SIM card in place, not a problem if you’re producing millions of handset or tablet units, more of an issue for medium volume requirements.

The socket accepts the 4th form factor Nano SIM card format. This format measures 12.3mm Length x 8.8mm Width x 0.67mm Thickness and maintains existing SIM contact arrangements.

The Nano SIM card reduces insulator length from 15mm, width from 12mm vs Micro SIM card insulators.  Card thickness is reduced from 0.76mm, which is the standard on Mini and Micro SIM cards.

Vertical Micro USB Connectors – Long leads for thicker PCB’s!

In response to customer demand GCT are delighted to release Micro USB connectors with 2.3mm leads suitable for 1.6mm PCB thickness.  GCT’s range of vertical micro USB connectors now stretches to six products, including SMT and thru hole types.

Customers loved the original thru hole connectors – USB3105/3130, however some customers using thicker PCB’s found the original 1.5mm shell stake/lead length wasn’t suitable for 1.6mm (.062″) thick printed circuit boards.  USB3106 B type & USB3131 A/B offer 2.3mm leads perfect for thicker PCB’s.

USB3106 & 3131 are in stock in your local GCT office for next day sampling.  Future and Newark Electronics have stock in place today.

Vertical USB3 connectors offer  – 30µ” gold plating allowing 5,000 mating cycles, high temperature plastic to allow paste in hole reflow process and metal stakes for PCB retention.

New – Nano SIM Connector SIM8050 Push/Pull Type.

GCT are delighted to be first to market with a Nano SIM connector.  SIM8050 is a 6 contact push-pull Nano SIM connector with 1.45mm low profile height, tiny 12.3mm x 11.0mm outline and card stop feature.  It’s suitable for 5,000 mating cycles with an operating temperature of -20°C to +80°C.

SIM8050 accepts the recently introduced new Nano SIM card format, Nano-SIM or 4FF (4th form factor) measures 12.3mm × 8.8mm × 0.67mm but maintains the existing 2FF and 3FF contact arrangements. Compared to Micro SIM a smaller area of isolating material remains around the Nano SIM contacts to avoid short circuits with the connector.  The 0.67 mm thickness of the Nano-SIM card is approx. 15% percent less than Mini/Micro SIM card thickness of 0.76mm.

New Micro SIM Connector – Push/Pull Style

GCT developed a new Micro SIM connector in push-pull style.

Micro SIM cards are the same contact arrangement as standard ‘Mini SIM’ cards, however a smaller card size of 15 x 12 mm shows a large saving in SIM card footprint.

Available in 6 or 8 contacts with a 2.45mm profile. SIM7050 is suitable for 5,000 SIM card cycles, contact force holds the Micro SIM card in place.

USB3 Micro Connectors–Super Speed in Tiny Format

GCT are excited to offer a new range of USB3 Micro connectors in right angle PCB mount with A/B and B mating configurations, this complements GCT’s existing full size USB3.0 offering.

USB3 significantly increases date transmission speeds vs. USB2, allowing transmission of up to 4.8 Gbps, x10 faster than USB2, this step up allows seamless uncompressed transmission of high speed data, such as moving HD images.

USB3.0 allows for more power when required, Micro connectors have 10 contacts which allow an all signal option at 1.0A per pin, or a power/signal option with two pins rated at 1.8A and the remainder running at 0.5A, operating temperature is -30° to 85°C.

PCB sockets are backward compatible with Micro USB2, USB2 micro cables plug into USB3.0 micro receptacles using the ‘left hand’ cavity, note data transfer at lower USB2.0 rate.

GCT offers SMT micro versions in bottom mount (standard) with pure SMT or with thru hole stakes for strength.  30µ” gold plate is standard, allowing 10k mating cycles.  A/B types have a reverse Superspeed diff. pair pin assignment which allows On-The-Go option.

Reverse Mount Micro USB Connectors – Top Mount options!

GCT offers a Micro USB2 connector for top mount printed circuit board applications.

GCT’s reverse B type allows horizontal Micro USB connectors to be mounted on the top side of PCB, standard Micro USB connectors are mounted on the bottom of the PCB. The top mount connectors accept µUSB cable plugs with USB symbol facing upwards, which is the proper orientation, to take advantage of the top mount design option customers must make PCB cut outs, this caters for space envelope of cable mounted plug ‘tangs’ mounted on the bottom of cable plugs.
