Nano SIM connector facilitates ultra-secure data access

In today’s ever-more connected society, authenticating identities and protecting data is essential to keep users safe and enable services in personal devices, connected objects, the cloud and in between.

Two-factor authentication plays a key role in such protection strategies, and can be implemented as an easy to use solution using advanced smart card technology. Certificate-based technology generates and stores credentials such as private keys, passwords, and digital certificates inside the protected environment of the smart card chip.

In one such solution, users must supply both their personal authenticator device and password to authenticate, providing a critical second level of security beyond simple passwords alone to protect valuable digital business resources.

This innovatively-designed two-factor authenticator solution comes in the form of a USB stick. GCT is similarly innovative, being the first to market with a nano SIM connector – a product which is now in full production. This motivated a leading player in data security technology to partner with GCT for their first mutual project, to integrate GCT’s SIM8051 into the USB authenticator where the Nano SIM connector facilitates ultra-secure data access. The companies worked together to cost down the connector for production.

The connector allows use of a SIM to hold certificates for encryption purposes. The SIM’s architecture and ciphering provides better security than conventional chip memory, as well as being more cost-effective. This use of a SIM for memory capacity rather than wireless capability is almost unique.

While being an economical solution, the SIM8051 offers a durability of 1,500 cycles, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The housing material is LCP with UL94V-0 flame retardant rating.

Connector production is backed by extensive international support. Dealing directly with the customer in two different locations – Europe for design and Asia for production, GCT’s local presence in these markets was also instrumental to the smooth running of the project.

Global Connector Technology’s new vertical Micro USB plug is perfect for docking applications. Often Micro USB male plugs are cable mounted and supplied as part of a cable assembly, however USB3150 is vertical PCB mounted, which allows it to be used in docking charging applications. A great example is the new launch of worlds smallest phone charger ‘Nipper‘ – currently on Kickstarter – using this part.

Nipper’ uses AA batteries to give your gadgets an emergency boost

  • Nipper charger was created by two students from Brunel University
  • Measures 1.7cm across and is designed to fit on a keyring
  • In the event of a phone running out of charger, users can buy two AA batteries and insert them into the device, using it to charge their phone
  • Batteries provide just enough power to make a call or access a map online

The Nipper is designed to be attached to a key ring (shown in the first illustration) and only used in an emergency. When this happens, users open it (2) and place two AA batteries between magnets (3) before connecting it to their phone (4). Includes GCT's micro usb plug.

The small cube has a cloth or leather strap and weighs just 10grams – less than a house key or charging cable.  The gadget doesn't need to be charged beforehand, meaning that people don't have to remember to charge a battery, as well as their phone. Includes GCT's micro usb plug.

Recently we sent one of our GCT sample boxes over to Ben Heck of the Ben Heck Show.GCT parts featured on the Ben Heck show - here's the sample boxBen is known for creating all sorts of interesting and unique electrical engineering products, and in this show he set about designing and building a point and shoot digital camera using the Raspberry Pi as a base.

Nano SIM Connector SIM8050 – Re-Engineered to 1.35mm Profile

Profile height is reduced to 1.35mm (.053″).  SIM8050 also offers the smallest SMT footprint size of any Nano SIM connector on the market at: 10.8mm x 12.20mm (.425” x .480”).

SIM8050 now includes a protective full metal shell offering better protection from heat damage to the SIM card.  Improved card insertion and extraction allows for a better user experience, whilst maintaining excellent vibration and shock characteristics.

The connector is available as 6 contact push-pull type, cards are inserted and removed by hand. It’s suitable for 5,000 card insertion cycles and a card stop function allows the Nano SIM card to by plugged in one orientation only.

There are tray type Nano SIM connectors on the market, formed from a basic contact block and metal shells, which must be purchased separately. In addition to multiple reflow processes the customer must source a plastic tray to hold the SIM card in place, not a problem if you’re producing millions of handset or tablet units, more of an issue for medium volume requirements.

The socket accepts the 4th form factor Nano SIM card format. This format measures 12.3mm Length x 8.8mm Width x 0.67mm Thickness and maintains existing SIM contact arrangements.

The Nano SIM card reduces insulator length from 15mm, width from 12mm vs Micro SIM card insulators.  Card thickness is reduced from 0.76mm, which is the standard on Mini and Micro SIM cards.

As an example of a recent design that was turned around in eight weeks, a customer approached GCT to provide an RJ45 modular jack with a very small width sidewalls, their application didn’t have the space to accept a standard size connector. After understanding the customers’ requirements and assessing the quality implications of molding very thin side walls, we asked ’why use sidewalls at all?’

GCT offered a modular jack connector without an outside wall, the key design challenge was to hold the eight contacts in place, as without a side wall they would be highly likely to move out of position upon mating. GCT proposed a snap fit comb to be fitted over the contacts of the SMT connector post reflow soldering. The fitted comb not only keeps the contacts in the correct position for the lifetime of the product but also holds the contacts upright for final assembly, securely fastened in place by the customer’s SFP die-cast hood.

To allow auto SMT assembly the main body of the connector was designed to be fitted on the underside of a cutout PCB with two locating pegs providing placement assistance and extra strength.

GCT also offered custom tape & reel packing, no special film was required as flat area was designed on the connector to allow vacuum suction, commercially GCT delivered the solution for the same price as a standard SMT mod jack.

What’s more GCT is also providing the mating special cable assembly, screened to prevent EMI/RFI and including a special offset keyed RJ45 cable plug, which removes any chance of mismating.

USB3.0 Slimline Mid-Reverse Connectors

With the nature of electronic design ever changing to offer devices that are both smaller and slimmer it’s imperative that component manufacturers evolve connector technology in response. For this reason Global Connector Technology (GCT) has introduced a new range of USB3.0 mid reverse connectors that are ideal for inclusion in devices such as tablets, notepads and other hand held devices.

In low profile applications where height above and below the PCB is key, GCT offers mid bottom mount USB3.0 connectors. USB3.0 full size connectors are mounted as standard on the topside of the PCB. GCT’s innovative reverse connectors allow mounting on the bottom of the PCB, the connectors sits in a cut out on the printed circuit board thus minimising height. Receptacle insulators have perfect orientation to allow normal cable assembly plug mating with USB symbol facing upwards.

  • USB1115 with cutaway face is perfect for angled panels, with an ultraslim 5.4mm body height.
  • USB1110 is mounted below the PCB, while the bulk of the connector sits above the PCB. Both connectors are packed in tape and reel and are suitable for the demands of high temperature processes.

New – Nano SIM Connector SIM8050 Push/Pull Type.

GCT are delighted to be first to market with a Nano SIM connector.  SIM8050 is a 6 contact push-pull Nano SIM connector with 1.45mm low profile height, tiny 12.3mm x 11.0mm outline and card stop feature.  It’s suitable for 5,000 mating cycles with an operating temperature of -20°C to +80°C.

SIM8050 accepts the recently introduced new Nano SIM card format, Nano-SIM or 4FF (4th form factor) measures 12.3mm × 8.8mm × 0.67mm but maintains the existing 2FF and 3FF contact arrangements. Compared to Micro SIM a smaller area of isolating material remains around the Nano SIM contacts to avoid short circuits with the connector.  The 0.67 mm thickness of the Nano-SIM card is approx. 15% percent less than Mini/Micro SIM card thickness of 0.76mm.
